What you need to know

  • Microsoft says people have requested that the Xbox HDR Game Calibration app make its way over to Windows.
  • Microsoft is indulging the request and has announced a Windows HDR Calibration app is on the way.
  • The app's already been teased to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel.

Xbox has the Xbox HDR Game Calibration app to help displays and games play nice with each other when it comes to attuning for high dynamic range (HDR). Windows doesn't have such an app, meaning especially light and dark parts of your screen can lose vital visual details due to HDR discrepancies.

To fix that issue, Microsoft has announced that Windows will be receiving its own HDR Calibration app. Soon, color consistency and accuracy issues will be a thing of the past on your PC's display. The only mysteries are whether it'll come to Windows 11 and Windows 10 as well as when the app will actually arrive. There's no date for it yet, but in the announcement blog post, Microsoft notes that Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel have already seen a teaser for its arrival.

"If you are on the Windows Insiders Dev channel, you may have noticed a new section 'HDR display calibration' under System > Display > HDR settings," the blog reads, illustrating where the app will reside in the future. Until then, going to that destination will just lead you to the aforementioned post stating that the app is on its way. Expect the app to feature three testing patterns:

  • One to determine the darkest visible detail you can see
  • One to determine the brightest visible detail
  • And finally, one to determine how bright your display can be

That's all the news there is at the moment for the Windows HDR Calibration app. But if you want to know more about the latest surprises for Insiders, check out our hands-on video with the latest build.
