Update August 27, 2021 at 10:05 a.m. ET: Twitter's back, more or less.
Bad news for anyone obsessed with being absolutely wired to the 24/7 stream of media madness that floods the channels of Twitter on a nanosecond-to-nanosecond basis: The home of tweets is on fire, and no one's brought a firetruck yet.
As Twitter smolders in hot, red "down" reports over on downdetector.com, take this opportunity to reflect on how things got this bad.
The story starts at 8:15 a.m. ET, when everyone checks Twitter while drinking their morning coffee — except for today. Today, people couldn't get on Twitter at that time, and reports started flooding in. Before anyone knew it, the report count had climbed to nearly 12,000 by 9:13 a.m., indicating Twitter had indeed fallen and could not get back up.
It remains to be seen when, if ever, Jack Dorsey's worldwide social experiment will see the light of day again, but we can safely assume it'll be back online in no more than a few minutes, if not a few hours at the absolute latest. So enjoy the brief respite from online toxicity, memes, and debates while you can. Perhaps envision a bluebird chirping outside your window, waiting for you to gently tie a little scroll with a message to its claws so it may manually deliver a tweet to someone else.
In any event, we'll update this post when Twitter comes back, at which point you can rest easy. Until then, keep checking downdetector.com to see the report count rise, and rise, and rise.
