What you need to know

  • Torchlight III is officially launching on Steam on Oct. 13 after four months in early access.
  • All early access players will automatically receive the full version.
  • The game is priced at $40 and is also simultaneously releasing for Xbox One and PS4.

Torchlight III, the latest chapter in the hack-and-slash dungeon crawler first released in 2009, will be released on Steam, Xbox One and PS4 on Oct. 13 following four months of Steam early access. A Nintendo Switch release is planned for later this year. All versions will sell for $40.

"The full release of Torchlight III wouldn't have been possible without all of the incredible work from the entire Echtra team and our excellent community of early access players," Max Schaefer, CEO of Echtra Games and co-founder of the Torchlight franchise, said in a press release. "We've put our heart into this new adventure and it has been awesome getting so much support from players while the game has been in live development. With the significant changes we've made throughout Torchlight III's journey in early access, we have done our best to meaningfully integrate players' feedback as much as possible into the game as we march toward launch."

Schaefer was a co-designer of Diablo and Diablo II, and Torchlight shares much of the game's style while using a goofier tone. The game can be played solo offline or cooperatively online with up to four players.

Torchlight III was initially called Torchlight Frontiers and was meant to launch last year as a free-to-play MMO. Set a century after the events of Torchlight II, the game tasks players with saving the world by exploring and settlinng the wilderness and building forts where they can upgrade gear and store their pets. Every version of Torchlight III will have its own unique fairy pet, which can be improved with skills and gear. They'll help fight enemies but can also be used to take your items back to town to sell when you run low on inventory space.
