SNK Global revealed on Twitter today that it is bringing the Japanese fighting game Samurai Shodown to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on March 16. Players will be able to play the game across both consoles and the Xbox One via Xbox Smart Delivery.
Samurai Shodown was already one of the best fighting games for Xbox One, Series X and Series S, thanks to backward compatability, but the next-gen version will upgrade the gameplay to 120FPS. Released in 2019 after an 11-year hiatus for the franchise, the game marked a reboot for the series which launched in 1993.
The 2.5D weapon-based fighting game is set in 1700s Japan and features a mix of fantasy and historical figures. The gameplay focuses on defensive fighting, counters, and disarms rather than combos. A new AI system introduced for Samurai Shodown learns the tactics that players use the most and creates ghost characters that can be shared with other players for them to fight against. Samurai Shodown also added three new characters to the franchise's big cast.
Two players can play the game offline while up to 10 can play online. The game is also available on PS4, Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch, and the Epic Game Store. There hasn't been any announcement yet on if a similar update will be happening to bring the game to the PS5.
Visual upgrade
The franchise that kicked off in 1993 has returned after an 11-year hiatus with a new title that recreates the classic mechanics.
