First Gears 5 'Versus' multiplayer test kicks off on July 19

What you need to know

Gamers will be able to try out several modes and aspects of Gears 5 as part of a 'Tech Test' this month. The test features a "slice of the game's Versus offering" as outlined in an official Gears 5 post.

Three distinct modes across two new multiplayer maps will be playable throughout testing. You can read about them below.

  • Arcade: A new approachable, frenetic Versus experience.
  • Escalation: The pinnacle objective mode of Gears is back and better than ever.
  • King of the Hill: Capture the hill, enjoy the carnage.
  • Bootcamp: Practice your skills and learn new mechanics in our new training mode.
  • Tour of Duty: Experience a mini Tour of Duty, where you'll complete Medals to unlock exclusive Tester Weapon Skins to take into Gears 5. Complete all 3 Medals to unlock the exclusive Tester Banner to showcase in Gears 5.

More details will be revealed during the Gears 5 Versus next week.

Pre-load will be available starting at 1 PM EDT on July 17 with the Tech Test being around 15 GB. The actual test will run from 1 PM EDT July 19 through 1 PM EDT July 22.

There will also be a second Tech Test period from July 26 at 1 PM EDT until July 29 at 1 PM EDT.

The Tech Test is available to players on both Xbox One and Windows 10. If you have Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Xbox Game Pass, or Xbox Game Pass for PC, access is included in your membership. You can also access the Tech Test by preordering the game through the Microsoft Store. Players can also redeem codes provided when preordering physical copies of the game at participating retailers.

Because the Tech Test is for online multiplayer gaming, Xbox Live Gold is required. The purpose of the testing is to stress test the servers for the game and receive feedback for launch.
