What you need to know

  • State of Decay 2 is a co-op community-building zombie survival game from Undead Labs and Microsoft.
  • A streamer, Brian Menard, modded State of Decay 2 on PC to make it more closely resemble the Walking Dead.
  • The mod combines the new Lethal difficulty with additional challenges and changes.
  • Zombies only walk, freaks don't exist, blood plague cure isn't available, and every zombie is supremely lethal.

State of Decay 2 has come a long way since its initial launch in 2018, with continued support, updates, and new content for players to enjoy. Most recently, the game was updated with new difficulties, challenges, and settings for players, as well as being optimized for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. A streamer by the name of Brian Menard is taking advantage of the new settings and some clever modding to make the game even more intense while adding a good bit of 'the Walking Dead' to the game.

The mod is combined with the new Lethal difficulty, which makes resources extremely scarce, causes zombies to become extremely dangerous, and in general makes the game nearly impossible for all but the most experienced players. The Walking Dead mod gets rid of all freaks (except for the occasional screamer), turns all zombies into lethal plague zombies, removes plague cure and all ways to heal plague damage, and finally makes all zombies "walkers" by removing their ability to run.

The end result is a State of Decay 2 game that eerily resembles the difficulty and challenge that'd be present in the Walking Dead universe and makes for an exciting combination that is fun to watch and (presumably) even more fun to play if you enjoy that kind of absurd challenge. Every zombie is lethal, and a single bite can be enough to end the game for even the sturdiest of survivors.

State of Decay 2 is still the go-to for anyone looking for this kind of specific zombie-survival action, but Undead Labs is hard at work on State of Decay 3, which will hopefully up the stakes in every way in this growing video game franchise. If you're still playing State of Decay 2, be sure to invest in one of the best Xbox Series X|S Headsets that way you never miss a zombie.

Brian Menard streamed the first episode of him playing through the ludicrous Lethal difficulty with his custom mods enabled, and it's certainly interesting to see. Would you play State of Decay 2 with this mod enabled? Let us know in the comments below!
