Minecraft Earth beta saves will be wiped 'at least once' before launch
Minecraft Earth serves up an expansive blocky AR world to explore – but don't get too attached to your discoveries.
What you need to know
- Minecraft Earth beta has dropped in London and Seattle to select testers.
- Developer Mojang warns players that progress will be wiped throughout the testing period.
Microsoft has kicked off the early access beta for Minecraft Earth, providing the first taste of its blocky augmented reality (AR) spinoff. Fusing virtual block building with GPS data in a Pokemon GO-style experience, select iPhone users in Seattle and London can now get hands-on ahead of launch.
While Minecraft Earth already packs a robust initial foundation in testing, developer Mojang emphasizes the work-in-progress nature of the current title. New features and refinements are expected throughout trials, leading to a full public launch later this year. However, don't get too attached to your Minecraft Earth discoveries and creations just yet.
Taking to the Minecraft Earth beta FAQ, Mojang has confirmed that as a result of testing, it "will wipe everything at least once during the beta period." With an experience focused on rounding up collectible items and building structures, keep in mind beta progress will be temporary.
With the Minecraft Earth beta underway, invites have been distributed to a limited pool of London-based and Seattle-based registrants via email. Budding players can now sign up via the Minecraft Earth beta portal, ahead of a rollout to more cities and players in the future.
