MDA Compact V (aka Diamond 2) announced for UK

The phone will be known as the MDA Compact V, following that naming convention. You can tell by the picture at right that the shell is a little custom compared to the unlocked version that we're used to seeing, but that's par for the course. We've known shells to vary slightly among U.S. carriers as well.

Something we're definitely not used to in the U.S. is seeing the new hotness from HTC available free on contract, but that's exactly what T-Mo's doing here. The MDA Compact V will be available starting May 21 for free with a plan that costs at least £50 a month.

Full presser after the break, for those of you into that sort of thing.

Update: Eagle-eyed reader Jim (Hi, Jim!), ya know, actually read through the entire press release and saw that T-Mo mentions an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5 in September. As we've still heard nothing official from Microsoft, simply take that for what it is ...

London,

[[ date month 5 day 7 year 2009 ]] 7 May 2009: T-Mobile today announces the launch of the MDA Compact V, an advanced touchscreen smartphone designed exclusively for T-Mobile which combines elegant styling with an impressive feature list, including access to the latest mobile internet and entertainment services.

Building on the success of last year’s T-Mobile MDA Compact IV, the Compact V is the latest in T-Mobile’s exclusive MDA portfolio, a collection of high-end smartphones designed for those who won’t compromise on either sophisticated style or outstanding functionality.

The T-Mobile MDA Compact V is the first T-Mobile device to showcase internet on your phone with widgets, which allows users to select their favourite websites, including eBay, BBC News and Twitter, and receive updates as soon as information comes in, keeping them in-the-know on the latest news and views. Searching the web is effortless too with fast internet on the move with Mobile Broadband.

Need to search for a location? The T-Mobile MDA Compact V has integrated Sat Nav and comes with a seven day CoPilot trial to make sure you’re never lost again. On 1st June, T-Mobile will start a promotion which will offer 10,000 customers that sign up to an 18 month contract free CoPilot Sat Nav for 18 months.

The T-Mobile MDA Compact V is a smartphone that has sacrificed neither form nor function. The slim, light-weight device has a full 3.2 inch touchscreen display encased in a sleek jet black exterior. But it’s not just got looks - it’s got brains too. It features the latest Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 technology (an update to 6.5 is available in September) including Instant Email -  ideal for both busy entrepreneurs and people who never want to be out of touch with friends and family.

On the entertainment front, there’s a built-in MP3 player to play your favourite music tracks, a media player to watch videos and a 5 megapixel camera so you can take and share great quality photos.

Daniel Meredith, Head of Handset and Device Marketing, T-MobileUK, commented: 'The T-Mobile MDA Compact V is a great addition to our ever-popular MDA range. It takes the web experience of the MDA portfolio to a new level with the introduction of internet on your phone with widgets and it’s also the first MDA device to boast all the benefits offered by the very latest Microsoft Windows Mobile platform.'

The T-Mobile MDA Compact V is available from 21st May at T-Mobile stores and online at www.t-mobile.co.uk and isfree on T-Mobile price plans from £50 per month.
