What you need to know

  • Lenovo announced three new entries in its Legion gaming PC lineup today.
  • Included are the Legion 5 and Legion 5P laptops, along with the Legion 5 Tower 5.
  • The Legion 5 and 5P are expected to launch in August and September, with the Legion Tower 5 set for an October release.

Lenovo is building on its gaming lineup with three new entries in its signature Legion line today. The Legion 5 (in two sizes), Legion 5P, and Legion Tower 5 all take advantage of powerful AMD processers paired with NVIDIA graphics. For the laptops, that means a step up to the AMD Ryzen 4000 range H-series processors for even greater performance on the go.

Here's a look at all of what's new.

The Lenovo Legion 5 comes in two sizes: a 17-inch model and a 15-inch model. Both, however, largely tap into the same internals.

You're looking at AMD's Ryzen 7 4800 H-series chips here, which have proven to be pretty powerful contenders in the laptop maket. That's paired with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics, which should handle a wide range of games with relative ease.

Where things get more interesting is with the display tech, which is rated at 144Hz for smooth gaming. There's also Dolby Vision support, which can give you some of the best HDR available with brighter whites and deep, dark blacks.

Lenovo also touts the keyboard, which packs deeper key travel (up to 1.5mm), along with gaming standards like 100 percent anti-ghosting. All of this is packed into a chassis that looks pretty elegant for a gaming PC, while still integrating advanced heat dissipation.

Beyond the standard Legion 5 duo, there's also the Legion 5P, which is destined for markets outside of North America. Lenovo is pitching this model as "ideal for esports." The 15-inch laptop features the same CPU and GPU setup, along with a 144Hz Dolby Vision display with a 5ms response time.

The biggest difference here is a higher RAM ceiling of 32GB of 3200 MHz DDR4 memory. Lenovo has also worked in enhanced thermals with a quad-channel ventilation system, manual control for performance modes, and "Dual Burn support," which Lenovo says "pushes the CPU and GPU together for improved framerates." Seeing how much that impacts performance, however, will have to wait until the Legion 5P is available.

Rounding things out is the Legion Tower 5, a 26-liter desktop PC that's built for smooth gameplay at 4K resolutions. You'll find an AMD Ryzen 9 3950X CPU here, which should pack a punch. That's paired up with up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER graphics card.

There are plenty of storage and RAM options, with support for up to 128GB of 3200 MHz DDR4 RAM. Cooling also offers some customization with a choice between a 150-watt air cooler for the CPU, or a 200-watt liquid cooling system.
