The Lenovo Legion Go S caused quite a stir when it debuted at CES 2025, not least thanks to its inclusion of a SteamOS powered version. But exact availability information has been a little murky. However, you can still get a pre-order in now and secure yours for launch.

In the U.S., even Lenovo's own store hasn't gone live with a listing yet, though you are able to pre-order through Best Buy. In the UK, there are a couple of options, with both Lenovo and Currys offering pre-orders right now, but again, the availability information is all over the place across both the U.S. and UK.

Here's what you need to know.

Should you buy a Lenovo Legion Go S right now?

There's little doubt that the Lenovo Legion Go S is going to be a quality product. Our initial hands-on time with it at CES left us in no doubt of that. But there are a couple of points worth considering before you hit the pre-order button.

  • If you're more interested in the SteamOS version of the Legion Go S, then you'll be waiting a while longer. While Valve has said it will start making the OS available to other handhelds starting in April, we're not currently expecting the preloaded Legion Go S to arrive until May.
  • These pre-orders are all for the AMD Z2 Go version, not ones based on the familiar AMD Z1 Extreme. We don't have any detailed experience yet on how good the Z2 Go is, but on paper alone it seems like it's the weaker of the two. Its CPU only has four cores, versus eight, and the GPU is based on AMD's older RDNA 2, versus RDNA 3 in the Z1 Extreme.

The AMD Z2 Go-powered Legion Go S feels like a direct successor to the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck also has a 4-core CPU, but based on the much older Zen 2 architecture. The Z2 Go is based on AMD's Zen 3+, but uses the same architecture for its GPU as the Steam Deck.

Even using the Steam Deck as a baseline, the Legion Go S with the AMD Z2 Go should be a solid performer. But if you want the best of the best then holding out for the Z1 Extreme version might be the right call, or even the Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 which will be using the AMD Z2 and Z2 Extreme.
