Gears 5 features 'Bootcamp' combat training mode

What you need to know

  • Gears 5 launches in September on Xbox One and PC.
  • The game eliminates the season pass and loot crates.
  • There's a new "Bootcamp" mode which teaches you how to play multiplayer.
  • You can preorder the game for $60 on Amazon.

Gears 5 is an upcoming third-person shooter from The Coalition which features a campaign and multiplayer modes. While anyone can easily pick up and play the campaign, the multiplayer modes have a moderate learning curve, especially when it comes to choosing your weapons.

In order to better familiarize new players with the combat mechanics, the developer is introducing a "Bootcamp" mode. According to a post on the game's website, "Bootcamp is a new way to practice your skills and learn new mechanics before joining the fight in Gears 5... you'll play as Del as he helps Damon Baird gather combat data... This all takes place in specially-designed Training Grounds outside the House of Sovereigns."

It's great to see that The Coalition is giving newcomers a chance to become familiar with the shooting mechanics before they jump into the various modes. However, only time will tell how effective it will be.

Gears 5 shines with Unreal Engine 4. The game looks stunning and should run at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second (FPS) on Xbox One X. Gears of War 4 ran at 4K 30 FPS during the campaign and 4K 60 FPS during multiplayer. This time around, both modes are the same frame rate.
