Frost Giant Studios is a new RTS team founded by Blizzard Entertainment veterans
A new beginning for a classic genre.
What you need to know
- Frost Giant Studios is a new studio founded by a couple of former Blizzard Entertainment staff.
- The studio is focusing on making real-time strategy games.
- All of the developers previously worked at Blizzard in some capacity.
Two Blizzard Entertainment veterans, Tim Morten and Tim Campbell, are starting a new studio called Frost Giant Studios. Morten previously worked as production lead on Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void, while Campbell was the lead designer on the The Frozen Throne expansion for Warcraft 3, as well as having worked on Wasteland 3. While it's early days, the team is working on a PC real-time strategy (RTS) game and has raised $4.7 million so far.
"Real-time strategy players are an incredibly passionate community, and they deserve not just a great new game, but one they can share broadly with friends," Morten said in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. "Building a worthy successor will take time, but we're incredibly excited and grateful to carry real-time strategy forward at Frost Giant Studios."
A few other developers have joined the studio, all of whom are Blizzard veterans, having worked on games like StarCraft 2 and Warcraft 3. The studio has a Twitter account which you can follow for more information and future updates. The timing of this announcement is certainly interesting. Former Blizzard staff recently started Dreamhaven, a new publisher with two studios: Moonshot and Secret Door.
Meanwhile, Blizzard Entertainment developers are currently negotiating for better work conditions even as support has finally ended after ten years for beloved RTS title StarCraft 2 and hundreds of jobs are in jeopardy from the closing of the Versailles office. Looking ahead, Blizzard announced two large games with Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2, though both titles currently lack release windows.
