HP refreshes its mid and entry tier EliteBook 800 and 600 series with G9 for 2022
With Intel 12th Gen processors and the 800 series getting 16:10 the new EliteBooks are looking good.
What you need to know
- HP has announced the updated mid-tier 16:10 EliteBook 800 G9 series for 2022.
- There are also updates to the 16:9 EliteBook 600 G9 series for entry-level business work.
- Availability will be in March, with pricing to follow.
While businesses buy the top-tier EliteBook 1040 G9 for their executives, mid-tier and field workers get the more affordable EliteBook 800 and 600 series, respectively.
At CES 2022, HP announced refreshes to both lines, including three laptops for the 800 series and three laptops in the 600.
HP EliteBook 800 G9 series What's new
Like the EliteBook 1040 G9, the 800 series is getting bumped to 16:10 displays, which means narrower bezels, more room on the keyboard deck, and larger touchpads.
The EliteBook 800 G9 series includes:
- EliteBook 830 G9: 13.3-inch, 1920x1200 IPS
- EliteBook 840 G9: 14-inch, 1920x1200 IPS
- EliteBook 860 G9: 16-inch 1920x1200 IPS
All the laptops undergo MIL-STD-810H testing to ensure durability.
Besides the new 16:10 display aspect, HP is also unsurprisingly bumping the laptops to Intel 12th Gen CPUs, with the 3rd Gen Intel Evo Platform.
Besides screen size, dimensions, and weight differences, all three laptops are the same with the following specs. Only the EliteBook 830 G9 has fixed RAM (non-user upgradeable), while end-users can upgrade the EliteBook 840 and 860.

Port are just the important ones, including a couple of Type-A, Type-C with Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, headphone/mic, and nano-SIM slot. That SIM slot is for the optional 4G LTE or 5G modems that can be configured. Likewise, HP lets you tack on Tile (to track the laptop) and NFC for smartcards.

HP EliteBook 600 G9 series: What's new
Taking things down, the pricing tree is the HP EliteBook 600 G9 series. Like the 800 series, there are three models based on increasingly larger screen sizes. Still, unlike the 800s, the 600s opt for the more affordable 16:9 display aspect, drops Intel Evo and discrete amplifiers, is more limited for storage options, and omits advanced features like 5G or Tile tracking.

- EliteBook 640 G9: 14-inch, 1920x1200 IPS
- EliteBook 650 G9: 16-inch 1920x1200 IPS
If the name EliteBook 600 series sounds new, it is. Previously, HP referred to this line as HP ProBook but has now merged it with the EliteBook branding.

While not as fancy as the 800 or 1000 series from HP, this range of EliteBooks is better positioned for fleets of devices for deployment where testing againstMIL-STD-810H for durability helps with long-term IT costs.
The 600 series also drops down to a barrel charger, although since Thunderbolt 4 Type-C is included, customers can use that port in a pinch. However, you get a built-in RJ-45 Ethernet jack, which is nice.
The HP EliteBook 630 G9, HP EliteBook 640 G9, and HP EliteBook 650 G9 are expected to be available in March. Pricing will be available closer to product availability but usually begins at around $1,300.
