Bungie reveals 'Season of the Dawn' for Destiny 2

What you need to know

  • Bungie has released the trailer for Season of the Dawn.
  • The action is focused on Mercury.
  • The Red Legion is involved.

With the Season of the Undying coming to an end, Bungie has given us the first look at its next season pass, Season of the Dawn. In the latest trailer, we see Osiris — the central figure of the Curse of Osiris expansion — explaining how we've messed everything up again. By killing the Undying Mind, we have really and truly borked the timeline, and the Red Legion of Cabal is trying to change the past, so they win the Red War.

The new season comes with an original artifact for you to upgrade, a new six-player combat mode, new armor and weapons, and of course, a new chunk of story to play through. The story looks to center around the red army, though there is also a subplot of free a "Legendary" titan. It makes sense, too, as the Ward of Dawn is one of the Titan's super abilities. There is a lot of XIV imagery in the trailer, so perhaps the Titan is Saint XIV? This Titan is supposed to be "The greatest Titan of them all," but we will see. My Titan is a badass, so this fellow will have his work cut out.

The new artifact is called the Lantern of Osiris and is likely to work the same way as the Gate Lord's Eye. It will give you bonuses to your weapons and armor, and provide you with something fun to grind for. I think it's unlikely that they will change the barrier mods, though, as Eriana's vow has it built-in. I think barrier mods are here to stay.

Not much has been said about the new six-player game mode. We know it is called The Sundial, and it looks like a PvE event. In the trailer, you can see you and your fireteam fighting the Cabal, so it's likely to be a similar horde mode to the Season of the Undying. Hopefully, they will have listened to the fans and made the final boss at the end of the season something worth fighting.

Pretty new weapons

The new weapons and armor look sleek, as well. The armor especially looks stripdown, without frills, something I like a lot. I'm not sure if the weapon above is a new Exotic, but it seems to be a scout rifle with some kind of power shot ability. It looks fantastic, whatever it's power-up.

We are also getting some smaller extras, as well. There are new finishers — one of them is a Ryoken uppercut that I will be buying immediately — new emotes that show a Titan spiking a football, and even a new multiplayer map. Well, not a new map per se, but an old one returning.

The Rusted Lands returns to the PvP rotation along with an Elimination Mode. We haven't seen the Rusted Lands map since Destiny 1, so it will be fun to see how it holds up to the new supers and weapons from this new era of Destiny.

Seasons may be the way to go

I am liking the way these seasons are going. They are offering plenty of content for what, we hope, is a reasonable price. With the Vex offensive going away, I'm glad to see that there is a new game mode — the Sundial — to replace it. These Seasons are going to keep Destiny 2 for a long time, making Destiny 3 seem a long way off.

Right now, the Season of the Dawn is due for release on December 20, 2019, and we will be hearing more about it tomorrow on the Bungie live stream. We will update this post as we know more.
