The Arma series of video games are military tactical shooters more grounded in realism than your average video game, and boast of a passionate community of gamers immersing themselves in the world and creating brand-new content and mods. Bohemia Interactive is working on the next mainline title, Arma 4, but players can now get a sneak peek into the future of the franchise through the release of Arma Reforger on Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Arma Reforger is a standalone online multiplayer experience built on Bohemia Interactive's new Enfusion engine, and aims to deliver new levels of military realism and creative freedom over its predecessor. It also lets Bohemia Interactive work with the community on Arma 4, which is confirmed to be in the works. Arma Reforger combines two distinct modes, with the Conflict multiplayer mode tasking up to 64-players with accomplishing a variety of objectives while engaged in realistic military conflicts during the Cold War-era.
The Game Master mode, however, is where Arma Reforger (and the Arma franchise as a whole) really shines as some of the best shooter games. This mode allows players to dynamically create and control custom scenarios and missions, including editing the scenario in real-time while players engage with it. This mode also ties in seamlessly with Reforger's integrated mod support, which even lets console players utilize community-created mods to build and alter the perfect scenarios, or to enjoy completed experiences built by other players.
Players are already able to create practically anything they want, including roleplaying as Halo marines in Arma 3. It's not clear what players will be able to accomplish with Arma Reforger, which isn't a full sequel to its predecessor, but having the full creator, editor, and mod management tools (including the ability to join modded servers without restarting the game) baked directly into the game will enable players to create even more with less barrier to entry.
Arma Reforger is now available as a console exclusive on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, through Xbox's Game Preview program. There is no Xbox One support here, and Bohemia Interactive has made zero indication there ever will be. Arma Reforger also isn't available on PlayStation consoles at the moment. PC players can play Arma Reforger through Steam as an early access title. The feedback gathered through Arma Reforger will, hopefully, enable Bohemia Interactive to build an even more ambitious and comprehensive military tactical shooter in Arma 4.
Battle or create, your choice.
The Arma franchise comes to consoles through Reforger, available exclusively on Xbox Series X|S and PC platforms through Game Preview and early access. The latest Arma game is a peek into the series' future, and features intense, realistic Cold War-era multiplayer combat and a full-fledged platform for creation and modding.
