Near by is a simple application that is available for both Windows PC and Phones that will allow you to quickly located local resources such as gas stations, pharmacies and more that are close to your current location. It comes across as a handy app to have while traveling and is today's AdDuplex HERO App.
The HERO App program is a promotional campaign for Windows Phone and Windows developers on the AdDuplex Network. To say Near by is a simple app might be an overstatement. The app will use your current location to find a broad range of resources, map them out and offer you limited driving directions to help you get to where you need to be.
The primary screen is an alphabetical listing of the resources Near by will locate and include gas stations, banks, doctor's offices, gyms, police stations, furniture stores, car washes, veterinary offices and more. Tapping on a category will pull up a list of these locations that are within a few miles of your current location.
The individual listing will detail the name of the business and its address. Tapping on a listing will transition to a map view highlighting your current location and the location of the business. The map view has several viewing options such as aerial view, 2D/3D views and traffic flow. You can map a route to get to the business, but turn-by-turn navigation is not available.
On the plus side, Near by does have Cortana integration where you can ask Cortana to use Near by to find a business near your location. For example, if you tell Cortana "Nearby gas stations," the app will launch and list the gas stations close to your location.
In tinkering with Near by the app does have potential, but as is may be too limited for some travelers. I would have liked to have seen more information about the location such as phone numbers, links to websites, etc. and turn-by-turn directions. I do see Near by coming in handy when you are looking for businesses within a stone's throw or walking distance, but the app needs a little more punch to finding resources that are more distant.
Near by is a free, ad-supported app and while it's not Yelp, if you are looking for a simple resource finder it is worth trying.
