The Acer Aspire Vero is an affordable, eco-friendly Windows 11 PC
It's not the endgame for sustainable PCs, but it's a start.
What you need to know
- The Acer Aspire Vero is built around the concept of being eco-friendly.
- It costs $899 for the Intel Core i7 model and $699 for the Core i5 model.
- The Core i7 model releases October 5, 2021, with the less expensive model arriving later in October.
Not every company goes out of its way to develop eco-friendly products, but Acer's attempting to do so in a big way here with its Aspire Vero. Not only is this machine's packaging 100% recyclable, but parts of the laptop itself are aligned with its sustainability-minded goals.
Its chassis sports 30% PCR (post-consumer resin) plastic, which Acer claims cuts down on the machine's CO2 emission footprint by 21%. The keyboard caps are also 50% PCR, helping to combat landfill trash and virgin plastic production. And there's no paint on the chassis' surface, to further cut down on the Aspire Vero's overall ecological impact.
While there's still a long way to go in terms of building sustainable devices and keyboard caps and minority percentages of sustainable materials aren't going to save the planet singlehandedly, they're all part of a long-overdue start from the PC industry. Hopefully this is the first wave of many, many more sustainable machines.
And if you're not just into the Aspire Vero for its ecological values or unique, pseudo-postmodern industrial aesthetic, know that you can get some decent hardware in the thing as well. Here's what it packs:
